Summary
Some Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital patients are being cautioned that their data may have been exposed after a portable backup device was discovered missing on June 15. While it is yet to be determined if the device was lost or stolen, stored data included protected health information (PHI) and, therefore, potentially impacted individuals must be notified of this privacy incident. PHI found on this device may include names, dates of birth, medical record numbers, the date of studies, and, in some cases, mailing addresses. Other information found on the device, such as diagnosis and social security numbers, cannot be viewed without specific system software and appropriate credentials.
The Healthcare and Public Health Sector continues to be impacted by cyberattacks. While many organizations focus heavily on digital security, it is equally important to incorporate other cybersecurity factors, such as physical security, insider threats, and the importance of asset inventory and network mapping.
