Unknown Database Exposes 26 Billion Records

NJCCIC Data Breach Notification

Original Release Date: 1/25/2024

Summary

Security researchers discovered a massive trove of exposed records on an unsecured database. The breach, dubbed the “Mother of all Breaches” (MOAB), contains records compiled from past breaches and sold databases and may be owned by a data broker or data collection service. The MOAB contains 26 billion records and over 3,800 folders, each corresponding to a separate data breach. Among these records is data pertaining to governmental organizations across several countries, including the United States. Though duplicates are likely, the exposed data is considered sensitive and valuable to malicious threat actors who could leverage the aggregated dataset in various cyberattacks, including identity theft, sophisticated phishing schemes, and unauthorized access to personal and sensitive accounts.
